Sympathetic portrait of an obsessive personality. Krakauer deserves credit for investigating his own early reporting on the story of Chris McCandless's death, and correcting it.

Carla I read this book soon after it was written, expecting to like it as much as "Into Thin Air". I was very disappointed. Rather than an epic and engrossing struggle pitting Man Against Nature, as "Air" had been, McCandless' arrogance just annoyed me, and I finished the story shaking my head, feeling the wilful fellow got what he deserved. I hear the Sean Penn movie version is good. It must be a loose derivation.
