Majoring In Murder (Murder, She Wrote, #19)
by Jessica Fletcher, Donald Bain
by Jessica Fletcher, Donald Bain
Murder She Wrote, TV's longest running traditional mystery series, was set to never end. But during the 1996 fall season CBS decided to move the program from Sunday nights to Thursday evenings, against the NBC Juggernaut 'Friends'. Sadly that spelled the end of Jessica Fletcher's 12 season run, but fan demand brought about several TV films (the last in 2003) and the continuation of the book series of the same title (of which this volume was also published in 2003). At first the book series started off with a rough start, with the first volume having several errors including Jessica driving!(Jessica has never learned to drive) However it seems between the first volume of 1988, and the latest just published this summer, Donald Bain has mastered the series making each volume feeling like a (expanded) new episode of the original series. the volume of this review "Majoring in Murder", takes the charm of the TV show and updates it for the 21st century. Jessica's cell phone isn't a size twelve and the violent content is a click or 2 over the TV show's modest bullet holes, and blood puddles (specifically,a decomposed body and one that has it's head scrapped open). While never introducing new recurring characters, and having no continuity with the others in the series, "Majoring in Murder" keeps the reader guessing and is as well written as any of the big mystery series, despite a few guessable plot points. While still a cozy, "Murder" is a traditional mystery at heart and will please anyone looking for a good mystery.
