When categorizing this book, I had no idea what to put. Is it horror? Well, there are zombies. Action-adventure, definitely. Speculative fiction? I generally think of that as futuristic stories, but this is a steampunk alternate history book. But sure, why not!

Basically, this book is an awesome mish-mash of genres filled with interesting characters. I really liked Briar, I liked the Indian Princess, I liked the pirate-y smugglers. This is not a character-driven novel, no one changes and we don't have deep understandings of anyone. But this is an action story, so I am fine with that. Boneshaker really has some great action scenes, and the plot moves at a brisk pace. The zombie mechanism was pretty cool, and the book has a good opening scene that really sets the tone (I'm a sucker for a faux historical opening).

Some violence, no real language, no sex. Appropriate for teen readers.
