Rachel's review of The Mephisto Club: a Novel
The Mephisto Club: a Novel
by Tess Gerritsen
Again, an audiobook for entering data. Okay--so strange topic and it sounds a bit 'out there'. But outside of being pretty grisly, I found this book really interesting. In terms of the writing style, this author takes you right to the point of believability but then stops short and brings you back. Several times during the recording I felt myself saying...okay, now you've gone past the point where I'll believe you and it's turning into some weird supernatural story...then 2 sentences later she brings you back to the 'real world' and I'm hooked again. Interesting approach. Also--apparently this is the latest book in this murder/mystery series (I haven't read any of the others) and though it's a story of its own, there are references to past circumstances that I of course missed...didn't really take away from the storyline here though.
Would I recommend it? I've never been one to really stop and think about the whole heaven/hell, evil in the form of Satan and where 'it' comes from kin...more

Would I recommend it? I've never been one to really stop and think about the whole heaven/hell, evil in the form of Satan and where 'it' comes from kind of thing. Yet I do seem drawn to biographies of 'evil'. Reading some of the theories (religious and not) of the origin of 'evil' fascinated me. In addition, another topic I've been intrigued with for some time is the history of Christianity...the unpleasant side of it. Rejection/covering up of certain writings, pre-Jesus 'mythology' and implications arising from it etc etc. This book talks about some of this and I found it pretty interesting. I wish it went more in depth....she merely teases you with this information while she keeps the murder/mystery fiction part as exciting/fast paced as she can. But then provides a note at the end with more information that you can research if interested. So if either of these two topics (understanding they are of course presented throughout a fictional novel) interests you, check it out. ...less
