Maureen Milton Since this title hasn't circulated during my tenure as librarian, I had decided to weed it. Reading the first bit drew me in and I ended up thoroughly enjoying this vintage (1969) British teen novel. The characters (if a bit one-dimensional) are engaging, as are the setting and plot. I found myself wanting to neglect my work and head off to read the next chapter, nicely laced with intrigue, a few sparks of romance, and terrific Britishey details about a silent Rolls Royce, the mist rising on the moors, and a broad Yorkshire accent. The conclusion ties up a bit too tidily for the modern reader, but the same modern reader might just find the contrasting bouts of rashness & reserve unusual fare.
I'm going to give it to an 8th-grader tomorrow & see how it fares in the hands of a 14-year-old. Then, I'll decide whether to weed or not to weed.
