If there's anything I really respect, it's the ability to make a dense, exhaustively-researched nonfiction book truly readable. A nonfiction page turner is a thing of beauty. This book goes a step further and not only makes the story of a murder that took place 150 years ago seem immediate and gripping, but also provides a real mystery, in spite of the fact that there was both a confession and a conviction in the case.
