I the two other books by Carey that I read in college - <i>Oscar and Lucinda</i> quite ecstatically, in fact - but this one, while quite well written la-de-dah, is impossibly and distractingly full of profanity. Sure, it's improtant to the to the characterization of the figures of the novel, approprate to their social backrounds, blah, blah blah. Doesn't much matter if it keeps me from being able to like the book enough to read it.
