Okay. I started this book under the impression that it was about Sherlock Holmes and his protege, and that after the initial introduction, she would then go out to solve mysteries on her own. WHICH IS NOT THE CASE. So you have Mary Sue Russell running around with Sherlock Holmes, and everyone, without exception, loves her. Because she is perfect and oh so smart.
Right.
I would have been fine with all that, the dialogue was appropriate for the setting, which was good. But I read more about the series when I was halfway through, I learned that (view spoiler)
Also - the plot moves along at an okay clip when they are solving mysteries, but then they (view spoiler)
Nevermind what this author does to poor Watson, who I always liked a lot. He is not a doddering village idiot!
