I just kept thinking, "goddamn, it's depressing that we need a middle-class journalist to tell us what we probably could have learned just by chatting with the grocery store clerk". Also, goddamn, it's depressing.

954416 Though to be fair, one should not dissmiss Erenreich as a journalist she is more a scientist (her PhD is in molecular biology) turned political activist. But yeah, it is depressing, especially considering that it was written seven years ago, and if things have changed in the mean time, it has been for the worse.
