I see this book being part of a Social Studies text set in 5th grade. I am a big fan of these books because children can try to place themselves in a historical event or time period. The topic of perspective in war can also be brought up because the war has torn her family apart because of clashing ideas of who is the 'good' side. The main character tries to look at both sides while dealing with her good friend going to war.
