Read in December, 2010

I initially picked this book up because I thought it was the book based on the movie “Black Swan”. It was evidently not about that once I started reading the back. I was somewhat intrigued nonetheless so I picked it up for reading.

I’m glad I did. After not reading for pleasure in years, I’m glad this was the book I started with. It had all the elements I loved in a story: a good writer first of all, good characters, a plot, and something fantastical. Simple enough, right? But that’s not always executed correctly in all story. The only problem with this book was that sometimes the author’s descriptions sometimes escaped my understanding, but it wasn’t often enough to be a huge bother and I don’t think it took dramatically away from the actual story. Overall, it was a pretty good read for those who like “coming into powers” stories — Garet was in her mid-twenties though so that was a good surprise because you usually read such stories with younger characters. She had some stupid but human moments which made her seem “real” but also annoying at times (seen with a certain vampire). It had a lovely mature feel in that sense. This book was a combination of two writers and I’m not certain about this, but I think sometimes I could hear the different writers.

I’d recommend this book!
