This is the story of Marius. Marius has always been far and away my favorite of the vampires, hands down, since he appeared. This is maybe not surprising, since I often tend to favor the man in his prime with some wisdom and glasses and books rather than the young, passionate hero. Get Oedipal with it if you want, but I don't think that's what this is about. Marius is one of the best written characters, with one of the most interesting histories. He's Roman, for heaven's sake! That's two thousand years of history to tell! His romance with Armand is one of the most touching I've ever read. Though I think the most touching scene of it is in "Queen of the Damned."

Aside from "Memnoch the Devil," this is my favorite of the series.
