Erik's review of A Salty Piece of Land
A Salty Piece of Land by Jimmy Buffett
For a book that took a year and a half to read, this is surpisingly good. Slow paced, but with a nice happy, but wistful ending, Jimmy Buffet catches the feelings he's done so well with his music which is painting a different life away from mass-media, mass-marketing, consumerism, etc that we all profess we wish we were away from while at the same time eating fast food, taking packaged vacations and staying on the interstates (literally and figuratively).
Interestingly enough, Buffet manages to live his different life of sea planes, boats and travelling of the beaten path by selling this through the same mass-media, marketing and cosumerist attitudes that he professes to hate through much of the writing.
For example - in the book he rails against how cruise ships have ruined many beautiful areas (in this case Tulum). But if you look at the Cruise Ship ports almost all have a Margaritaville.
Anyway, great book, just kind of ironic in how its done.
