this five-book series is everything i'd hoped for. moving slowly and deliberately over every circumstance, this first volume puts the magnifying glass on dostoevsky's childhood, first literary ambitions, and imprisonment. it even includes an appendix on freud's misguided psychoanalysis of the author.
