In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez
THIS IS MY FAVORITE BOOK OF ALL TIME. You do not have to be hispanic or a woman to be completely lost in this novel. Based on historical accounts of a family of sisters, this is the type of novel that moves you, makes you laugh, makes you cry hysterically, and ultimately when you turn the last page, you clutch the book to your chest overwhelmed with feeling. I was a teenager when I first read it, and it still has the same effect on me now as an adult. Moving.
