AK's review of Saturday
Saturday by Ian McEwan
** spoiler alert **
saturday follows one long and eventful day in the life of Henry Perowne, a neurosurgeon who lives in london, plays squash, loves his family, and pisses off a somewhat disturbed individual with slightly disastrous consequences. but not that disastrous. or that interesting.
i was very impressed with atonement, but didn't find this novel all that worthwhile ... didn't really care about the characters or the conflict, wasn't touched by the post-9/11 brooding throughout. to his credit, there were some very detailed and clearly meticulously researched bits about brain surgery that made me queasy they were so specific, but also, ew. if you want a book-long account of a single day in the life of one man, i'd just stick with ulysses.
if i do read another mcewan, it will be amsterdam, but i don't think it will be any time soon.
