This is truly a historical telling of the Tudors, from first to last. Although it seems that most people are enamored with the stories of Henry VIII, his wives and Elizabeth I, his daughter Meyer's well researched book tells even the not so glamourous history. Meyer delves into the destruction of the Catholic church property in England, the split with the church, the changing alliances with other countries, the many wars the Tudors were a part of, torture of those who offended them, and much more.

The reader will be exposed to far more than what one usually sees in the many movies and reads in historical fiction. It reads almost like a text book but is far too interesting to give up on.

I found it interesting to learn that Elizabeth was marked by scars from small pox which she tried to cover with a makeup mixture that included lead. Application of the make up, wigs to cover her loss of hair, and dressing sometimes took two or more hours. It is believed that the application of the lead based makeup over so many years was the likely cause of her death. It may have also contributed to her rotting teeth for which she often drank perfume to cover the odor.

Yes, with this look into the lives of the Tudors, the reader gets the bad and ugly along with the good.
