Deuker is a refreshing author to read because his plots are straightforward, his writing is direct and uncluttered, and he knows sports. This book will attract football fans, but they will find an interesting and worthwhile secondary story about overweight Dan (nicknamed Mitch), who is disappointed that he does not get to be editor of his school paper. Instead, he is assigned to cover sports. Despite being a non-athlete, Mitch knows football, and he discovers that covering games and writing articles about them is a lot of fun, especially when he gets to work with cute photographer Kimi. One mysterious player catches Mitch's eye, and he wonders why every time he writes something about this extraordinarily talented player, it gets edited out. Why doesn't Coach McNulty give Angel some real glory, since he's clearly talented enough to propel Lincoln all the way to the top? Mitch and Kimi vow to get to the bottom of what must be a huge story, but when the real facts come to light, Mitch learns something about journalistic ethics and what really matters. I skipped some of the play-by-play football passages since I don't understand the game, but the story was terrific. Great writing. Junior high, high school.
