After an almost preposterous opening 40-or-so pages dealing with the protagonist's impossibly bad life/evil wife in New York, I found myself in Newfoundland, and I never wanted to leave. Monumental characters rise up through the pines, and our sad sack hero rises up alongside them. The book feels so much like a real place, that you could pull out the pages and build a two-story house from them.
