I was happy to hear that a book I had never heard of won the Newbery (mainly because I was not in love with any of the front runners). This book certainly isn't perfect (nor can it compete with the past two winners), but I'm glad it won. I love the narrator, the newspaper articles, and the mix of historical fiction and mystery. My only complaint is that I thought the first half of the novel was a little slow. Overall, though, it is a well written, nicely packaged story that deserves its time in the spotlight.
