I have mixed feelings about this book. It's been years since I've read Stephen King and I enjoyed getting back into his writing. He manages to surprise me in simple ways -- not by over-reaching or by trying too hard, often with small observations that ring with truth.

And I feel this is a much more successful effort at portraying regular people being forced to confront a strange and terrifying idea of nature than, say, 'The Ruins.'

And, despite its length, I thought the ending was both spectacular and spare -- King doesn't blather too long in getting to the climax.

But I still don't love this book. Maybe it's that it started out in the supernatural range and turned to the horror, which I liked less. Maybe it's that just as I was starting to get to know and like the characters, the book became centered almost entirely on plot. Maybe my imagination just can't scare me enough.

It's a good book. I recommend it. But it didn't keep me awake at night reading it.
