I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell

by Tucker Max
The problem I have with this book has nothing to do with Tucker Max. From what I gather, a lot of people have a problem with the guy. I'm not sure why. He seems like a somewhat typical frat-boy type. The only thing is he's unapologetic about being an asshole. Maybe that's what bothers people. If you hate him for what he is, you're hating a whole lot of people.
And I personally think the strong negative response empowers Tucker Max. He wants to push your buttons. He's trying to be outrageous. I give the book one star because it's pointless and derivative and unfunny compared to similar works that are years (even decades) older. It doesn't work as a book. There are all sorts of books about subjects that I don't like that I think are terrific. I'm ambivalent about the subject matter here; that's not my issue. It's just not a good book. I suspect that for at least some of the people that like it, there are some wish fulfillment issues. And I'm past that too, even from a voyeuristic point of view.
