Great book discussion book. The narration is from the point of view of a 9 year old describing Libya in the 1970s - under the rule of "The Guide" or Qaddafi and those who oppose his totalitarian rule, such as Suleiman's father. There is also quite a bit of detail on the relationship between Suleiman and his mother during these stressful times. The book asks great questions such as when is OK to keep valuable information from your child? When it is justified to resist totalitarian rule? How can a parent care for a child when they are just a child themselves etc?

Great read- Matar really mastered the voice of a child and gave me an idea of the fascinating country of Libya.
