** spoiler alert ** This story is told roughly twenty years after the first Outlander book. Claire has returned to her own time and tells the story of her past to her daughter. The story of how Jamie had died during the battle at Culloden. How she had returned to her previous husband, Frank, to raise the daughter she had been expecting, and how Frank had made her promise not to tell the truth about her real father while he, Frank, was still alive.

My first reaction was horror. She killed Jamie?? How could she do that? I actually needed a few days' break from the book before I could start reading it again.

I'm glad I did. It was beautiful. I cried. A lot. The end left me with hope, but also sadness. Was that really the way it had to be? Nevertheless, a wonderful story.
