 rating: 4 of 5 stars Without warning, the multiverse is threatened by an all-destructive wave of antimatter, spawned by the evil Anti-Monitor. As universe after universe simply cease to exist, it is up to a rag-tag band of heroes and villains from every world in the DC universe, hand-chosen by the mysterious Monitor, to save all of existence. Starring nearly every character in DC (even if only for a panel,) Crisis on Infinite Earths was so huge its effects are still felt over twenty years later in the current DC universe.
 
 Often referred to as the grandaddy of all universe-altering crossover events, Crisis pretty much paved the way for what happens every other month now in the universes of the Big Two. However, unlike the current money-grabbing schemes of today's books, Crisis had a lot of heart and truly served a purpose: at the time, the DC universe was absolutely cluttered with so many different sets of continuity and alternate worlds that it was nearly impossible to tell what the hell was happening. Crisis neatly dealt with that problem by destroying all the alternate worlds and blending them into one, more easily understandable continuity, thereby making use of today's dreaded retcon but actually doing so in a manner that made a lot of sense.
 
 
 While at the time the world-shattering events and rampant body count of Crisis may have seemed shocking, it seems almost pedestrian at times in today's more grim, harsh comic book world. I found that refreshing, though; throughout, the book managed to remain pretty fun and I loved watching it all play out.
 
 Reading this book also made me a little nostalgic; I sometimes yearn for the days when heroes and villains felt the inexplicable need to explain what they were seeing and doing or say one another's names in nearly every panel.
 
 My favorite parts, though, were any panels depicting possibly my favorite DC villain, the dreaded ruler Darkseid. For some unknown reason, he constantly misuses quotation marks. You'd think a guy smart enough to nearly take of the universe on multiple occasions would have a good grasp on proper punctuation, but the cruel lord of foul Apokolips seems to struggle a bit. Could it be he's acting out to hide the shame he feels due to a learning disability?
 
 "Today, Apokolips and Earth faced a mutual threat. 'Cooperation' was essential for survival."
 
 And that, Darkseid, is the central "theme" of Crisis on Infinite Earths, one of the truly great crossover "events" in comics history.
