Recommended for: dinosaur lovers, wordless picture book lovers

My husband, daughter, and I read Chalk together. Let me start by saying I really enjoy wordless picture books. We had high hopes for the book, but it didn’t live up to our expectations. Don’t get me wrong, Chalk’s illustrations were quite impressive and very different, almost life-like. I guess you could say they are not our cup of tea. The story is simple. Children find chalk and draw pictures which come to life.

I usually flip through a book before reading it to my daughter, but didn’t this time. It wasn’t until we got to the dinosaur that I thought maybe it would be too scary for some children perhaps even her especially with the kids running and hiding from it in terror. She made no inclination that it bothered her. Thank goodness.

Lisa Vegan I'm glad that your daughter wasn't scared.

I'm trying to remember why I gave this 4 and not 3 stars. Perhaps it was the premise. I'm not interested enough to know why to borrow it again and reread it.

I am glad she didn't mind the mean dino either. The illustrator was very talented. But, I asked myself and my hubby if we would want to read it again and we both agreed probably not.
