Pretty much what it says on the tin. Sondheim's lyrics and his memories for the period in question. You don't read this sort of thing cover-to-cover, usually; I read the sections for shows I especially love. If you're a fan, you probably own this already, or are planning to. I heartily recommend you do. It's worth the purchase and will repay return visits as you see and hear these scores again. Every page is full of character. There's a little less technical songcraft here than the preface might lead us to believe, and a few more personal and theatrical anecdotes-- but I've no complaints on that score.
