** spoiler alert ** Historical fiction isn't my favorite genre as a whole, and this book didn't sway my opinion. Overall I found the writing clunky and the plot predictable and tidy, and the graphic depictions of the abuse heaped on Anna (and Trudie) by the SS Officer seemed emotionally manipulative.

I'm not convinced that the New Heidelburgians would never have accepted Anna after 60 years. What did Trudy think of the town, and why the change in spelling of her first name? Did she have any friends there? Did Jack and Anna ever reconcile (or at least come to a peaceful cohabitation), or did they have hurt and the cloud of her past over their marriage their entire lives?

How convienent that Trudy comes across Felix, who can tidily wrap up all the loose ends, including Max's fate.
