Banks is returning to the Culture universe that we've missed for so long, complete with smart-assed ships, decadent ( or are they? ) humans, and more than a smattering of action.

The book is decidedly political in tone, with some not-so-subtle swipes at right-wingers. There are essentially three interwoven plots that resolve into a coherent whole by the end of the book.

The characters are fleshed out nicely, the pace is strong and appropriate for the plot; The book is a welcome addition to the Culture series.
