Colby Cavendish is finally becoming friendly with Amanda, her high school's queen bee when she learns that her parents are sending her away for the summer while they deal with their divorce. Colby thinks that this is the worst thing that could happen to her. She feels this way because she has ditched her nerdy best friend to get in with the popular kids. Now she is finally feeling like a part of their prestigious group and she even hooked up with popular hottie, Levi!
Some might think that a summer in Greece sounds wonderful (I know I do!) but Colby is infuriated and just can't believe her luck. She's in tears as she arrives on the small island to stay with her "crazy" aunt and her aunt's boyfriend. Colby swears off the beach and all things fun, and spends all her time inside a tiny internet cafe to connect with the people she left at home.
Through e-mails Colby tries unsuccessfully to convince her parents to let her come home. She messages Amanda constantly in fear that her new popularity status is diminishing while she's away, and she keeps asking her when Levi is coming to Greece with his family. Colby also creates a blog to post about her unfortunate summer in Greece.
As you can tell, Colby is trying way too hard here. She is very, very whiny and pessimistic. Also annoying is how she e-mails. I don't know ANYONE who uses internet slang like, "OMG wuz just 1dering..." I mean, maybe, but that was just unrealistic to me. Colby also sounded really desperate when she kept asking Amanda about Levi. I wanted to shake her and be like, how desperate are you?!
So Colby ends up meeting Yannis, a cute boy from the island. She has to decide if she's into him or if he's not good enough by in-crowd standards.
I loved the setting. After reading The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series, Greek settings just captivate me. I know that the author has previously lived in Greece so I think she's able to incorporate an accurate portrayal of Greece in her books. I also enjoyed the blog comments that Colby received. I think that was a unique idea.
Overall I thought this book was just okay. If you're looking to read something by Alyson Noel, I'd recommend Faking 19 instead.
