Black Hawk Down was a very good look at what modern battles are like. Surprisingly, it was even more harrowing and intense than the movie. The book added details that made the excursion look even more perilous. All the background detail helped flesh out the novel a lot more than the movie and made it easier to follow what was going on and who was who (the index helped a lot too!). The writing style was very readable, but not really told as a story. It was more like reporting that jumped around a lot between points of view which made it kind of disjointed. All the jumps made it easier to put the book down rather than being a real page-turner. I would have liked to see more discussed about the politics and the big picture. The book kind of made the mission seem pretty pointless and futile in hindsight.
