I wish I'd read this book when I was younger. Mattie Ross is such a brave, distinctive character, drawn along the same lines as Caddie Woodlawn or Laura Ingalls Wilder, but more kick-ass. My only complaint was that it seemed to wrap up very suddenly. I'd recommend it to any young reader, especially fans of westerns or historical fiction.
