CJ Yay! I am no longer the only weirdo to have read this book!

Kim G Awesome! I go through strange phases w/ non-fiction. Last year I binged on homegrown-organic-local-whatever food books and then lots of far-flung travel writing, now apparently I'm into WWI era disaster books.

I really had no idea how large the Halifax Disaster was! I don't know how it stayed off my radar until now. It was an emotionally difficult book to read at points, but the author really brought it when it came to visceral horror. I thought she did a great job all around, well-researched and she managed a large cast of characters deftly (vivid and clear with the POVs without becoming overly omniscient).

I am never going to look at that Christmas Tree in the same way, though. Egads.

CJ Same here -- I spent a year reading about disasters (shipwrecks, fires, explosions, floods, etc) hence the Halifax explosion. I reviewed this one on my blog http://causticritic.blogspot.com/2009... and there are reviews of a lot of other disaster books there as well.
