A beautifully written book about Malaak, an 11-year-old girl living in Gaza City. Her father leaves for work in Jerusalem one day and doesn't return home. Set in 1988, Malaak's story weaves together with the story of conflict in the middle east, her mother and older sister's grief, and her brother's growing association with a group of "young radicals."
Malaak has a pet dove with whom she shares her heart, and who symbolizes her longing to soar above the struggles of her city. The book would appeal to 4th-9th graders who enjoy learning about kids in other societies.
