I didn't "like" this book in the way that those 3 stars might imply. I did find it very well written and interesting. McEwan doesn't tend to write characters I particularly like and the rich doctor who shapes Saturday I felt especially ambivalent about. What makes Saturday most interesting is that the 2003 build up to the war in Iraq behaves as a character in the book with all other characters interacting with and reacting to it in ways that are interestingly intimate, patterned and predictable. Saturday is slow to action and reaches a violent conclusion, and it seems to say that in a world that insists on interacting with violence and coercion on the political and economic stage, violence and coercion will be unavoidable in the personal lives of even the most privileged.
