Sylvester Duncan, the donkey, loves collecting pebbles...when one day he finds a magical red pebble that appears to grant wishes. But, be careful what you wish for! When Sylvester is out alone, he meets a lion and wishes he were a rock...and a rock he becomes. Sylvester knows that he must hold the pebble to ask for a wish, yet a rock is not capable. Oh what to do? The seasons change, Sylvester falls into a deep sleep, and his parents are besides themselves with fear and worry.

After many months without their Sylvester, the Duncans decide to go on a picnic. And, they picnic right on the rock that is their son, Sylvester. Oh! so close, yet so far! Will they recognize their son? Caldecott award winning Sylvester and the Magic Pebble is a classic tale of wishing and granting, yet finally realizing all you really need is what you have before you.
