This is an excellent resource for the new (and probably the experienced) parent. I generally agree with Dr. Sears's approach to parenting; he says that if parents are attuned to their kids (in a process he calls "attachment parenting") and can read their cues, both parents and children will thrive and have a happy, trusting relationship. At the heart of this method are the Seven B's: Birth bonding, Belief in your baby's cries, Breastfeeding, Babywearing, Bedding close to baby, Balance and boundaries, and Beware of baby trainers. I've found that as I try out some of these methods, I'm having a more satisfying experience with my baby. The purpose of this style of parenting is to help parents and babies learn about trust each other and for parents to develop intuition about how to care appropriately for their children.
The only one I'm not so keen on is sleeping with my baby. I can see the benefit for some children and families, and I've even had a small amount of success with it on occasion. But for everyday sleeping, it just doesn't work for me.
There are a number of excellent chapters on child development, helping your baby sleep, how to tell when your baby is sick, and what to do when he's not feeling well. I found the whole book very readable and fun. Dr. Sears and his wife have raised eight kids and have years of medical and practical experience. Their book is a little like having a trusted friend and doctor within arm's reach.
