In a society where only the strong can--and are allowed--to survive, Kira and her disability are an anomaly. Orphaned and moved to a new home, Kira discovers a new ability even as she discovers unpleasant truths about her society.

People expecting a straight sequel to The Giver are going to be disappointed. This doesn't have any visible link, except that it takes place in a post-apocalyptic village. It's not the same type of society The Giver had by any means.

And unlike its predecessor, this book doesn't have the haunting dystopian questions that made The Giver such a powerful story. It's a good story for middle grades, yes, but Gathering Blue doesn't approach the level of disturbing society or emotion contained in the other book. Taken alone, though, it's a good diversion.
