A great read. Lots of adventure near the beginning of this novel when Cole, a juvenile offender serving his time on a remote Alaskan island, is attacked by a bear. The bear is pure white, what people of the region call a "Spirit Bear." This mauling leaves Cole helpless and close to death - a moment in which he decides to live. The remainder of the book tracks Cole's physical and emotional struggles with the healing process. Many concepts of justice, fairness, anger, and hatred vs. healing and helping are introduced within the story line, and are exemplified in Cole's character. Great for boys, especially 8-12 years old.
