I ripped the audiobook to my computer last winter, but didn't have time to listen to it until recently. This book would be excellent to listen to as a family because of the great themes of hard work, family, caring for others, and redemption and forgiveness. Perfect for a family story during the Christmas season. Although this book is built around Christmas and Christian values, it is not preachy or sickly sweet.

This book is more about 12 year old George than it is about the dog. George is dealing with the loss of his father while living with his grandparents on their farm in Kansas in 1962. George goes to school and helps run the family farm. George notices his neighbor has a beautiful, but neglected Irish Setter.




Take the time to listen to this book with your kids on a trip and use the story to talk about how the themes in this book relate to their lives. If you ask the right questions your kids will think about something more important than the newest toy and have a great discussion with you!
