I have recently finished only part one, so I may change my mind about the negative things that I am about to say. This is a pulp fiction book with very little crafting skill behind it. I respect David Wilson's knowledge of robotics, but a couple creative writing classes before the publication of this book would have been helpful. I can not believe that an editor let some of the phrases in this book pass. The book is written from multiple points of view, yet barely ever changes its voice. The descriptive quality reminds me of reading my peers' stories in English class. I have been waiting months for this book to be released, excited by the numerous positive reviews, which makes its lack of literary skill more disappointing. I will finish it because I have been anticipating it for so long, and because I got my book group to agree to reading it, other wise I may have put it down after the first chapter.
It is not a book for the faint of heart. It is for someone who likes horrific scenes. What Wilson can do is talk about robots and visualize them violently murdering humans. For the good of the earth, of course.
After completing the book, I changed my rating from one star to two. The lack of crafting continues through out the book, and for much of the time I angrily visualized the editor more often than I did the characters of the book. What I did enjoy was Wilson's robots created by robots, and all the defense mechanisms to protect the robots, and the altering of humans to be more like robots. Through out the book, I thought that Archos was wiping out the human race for the reason he stated in the beginning "I am killing you so that your species will survive." Yet, in the end, it was just old fashion revenge. You killed me, so I'm going to kill you worse. Inconsistent, suspense-lacking, over all disappointment. I expect more from the movie.
