Summer Island focuses on a mother-daughter relationship that was broken years ago, when Nora (the mother) left the family and became a popular radio talk-show host. The youngest daughter, Ruby (now 28) never forgave her mother, nor cared to find out why Nora abandoned them.

When scandalous photos of Nora and another man are leaked, Ruby, an aspiring standup comedian, is hired to write a tell-all article. She gladly jumps at the opportunity, but things become complicated when Nora gets into a car accident and needs someone to accompany her to the family's former home on Summer Island.

Old wounds begin to heal on the island, and Ruby questions whether she should write the article after all; additionally, Ruby's relationship with former boyfriend Dean is rekindled and she learns that she can allow herself to be loved.

This wasn't one of my favorite books by Kristin Hannah. It was a little too "perfect" and unbelievable.
