Deja Dead
by Kathy Reichs
by Kathy Reichs
This book is everything that is wrong with modern mysteries. The author has made it so the main character has to be beyond imbecilic, inhuman basically, in order to make the plot move the way she wants it too. The writing isn't good, and the entire thing is predictable from page one (and I make a point to avoid making predictions but with this you just can't ignore the big piles of obvious sitting around).
This is what happens with modern mysteries because most of their main characters seem to be amateur detectives. The author does this and then decides that the character will have to be a complete idiot 80% of the time with only a few flashes of intellect. If you like Poirot, Whimsy, or Nero Wolfe, do as I usually do and stay away from modern mysteries entirely.
Also, don't go into this thinking it will be anything like the TV show Bones (which claims to be 'based' on these books). The only similarity is in the name and general profession of the main characters (but even their professional lives are vastly different).
I'm not that picky about most books. If it entertains, then good (I'm disabled and stuck at home all the time so I read pretty constantly). This book though... it is the worst book I've read in years. I was actually yelling at the main character during long parts of it.
