did not like it
bookshelves: fiction

The Almost Moon was an utter disappointment. I love The Lovely Bones; it's an all-time favorite, but Sebold managed to replicate absolutely none of that novel's beautiful writing, charm or deft handling of sensitive subject matter in her second book. In The Almost Moon, the main character murders her elderly mother. It's not just the dark subject matter; I like dark subject matter. But this book has enormous pacing problems, with flashbacks thrown in randomly, and plausibility issues. The main character is someone that I couldn't really root for or against; I didn't develop any strong feelings for her. Which is hard to believe considering the vitality of the characters in The Lovely Bones. I'm willing to say that The Almost Moon wouldn't have been published without the success of The Lovely Bones. It is that awful.
