Rare that historical fiction is recommended by a seventh grade boy. My source said he'd read this book four times...and since it is set in one of "my" countries, Burma, I ordered it right away. I found the writing and plot contrived and clunky. However, it takes place during a very interesting period in Burmese history, the Japanese occupation during WWII, and it set on a teak plantation where mahouts guide elephants to do the hard work. And it is certainly an action novel that will appeal to boys. Almost every other review I read was positive.
