Just to let everyone know. This book is available with bonus material from Kindle for just $1.99.

You can get it HERE

I started this a while ago but haven't finished it, yet. It was very interesting albeit far-fetched. But then again, it IS young adult fantasy. This book is the first in a very popular series and a new book is coming out soon. That is usually motivation for me to get caught up.

Flannery When you look at this book, does it just make you feel like, "man, this book is thick...I'm just gonna read something else"? I remember feeling like the whole time I was reading it. Then I got the second one from the library and just stared at it on my shelf for a bit before returning it.

Lyndsey I know! I feel terrible about that though. Oh the guilt! I seriously haven't picked this up since the update and I had barely started. The print is fairly large though so that helps! Depending on my mood, I sometimes judge whether or not to read a book by how much "white space" is on the pages.

Freish - lost in the north lol been there, done that. I read this book and I found it a bit strange sometimes.......I don't think I want to read the second book :/

Lyndsey I had convinced myself that it was just about kids surviving in a dystopian environment without adults around and then all the sudden they have superpowers! I was like "Whaaa?" I don't usually like to know much about books before I read them but that took me by surprise for some reason. I had just kinda picked it up without reading anything about it and wasn't expecting that.

Flannery DITTO. I started out reading it and I was getting kind of into it--kids alone, people disappearing, stuck in a bubble--I was ready for a scraping-it-together-fight-for-survival-whilst-figuring-out-why-they-are-in-a-bubble book but then they started getting superpowers and I was like WTF? I think I gave it four stars because I like the first part of the book. And I will eventually read the 2nd (and maybe the 3rd) to find out if they ever get out of that frakking bubble.

Morgan F There is going to be 8 books, I heard. That might take a while.

Lyndsey Geez! I thought three or four was going to be difficult. Excuse me while I search for an external hard drive that I can plug into my brain...

Flannery Morgan wrote: "There is going to be 8 books, I heard. That might take a while."

OMG. I need to wrap my head around that one.

message 9: by Janina (last edited Jan 03, 2011 01:37pm) (new) - rated it 2 stars

Janina 8?? Really? That's a long time to spend in that freaking dome. I would certainly start feeling claustrophobic. Not to mention all the little evil things that are in there with them ...

message 10: by Lyndsey (new) - added it

Lyndsey Evil things?! Haven't gotten to that part yet. What the hell IS this book? Kiddie Xmen meets Supernatural? Interesting...

Morgan F Wait. It gets even more convoluted.

message 12: by Lyndsey (last edited Jan 03, 2011 06:39pm) (new) - added it

Lyndsey More convoluted than miniature superpowered mutants mixed with demon-slash-creature slayers living under a dome with disappearing adults? Well shi-at!!

Morgan F Yup soon you will get a whole bunch of aliens/mysticism/more Lord of the Flies/more starvation/anarchy....and more.

message 14: by Lyndsey (new) - added it

Lyndsey Oh my God!!! Do they become cannibals? I'm so calling it. This series sounds delightful! Lol.

message 15: by Lyndsey (new) - added it

Lyndsey Ah hell. One of the books IS called Hunger, isn't it? I was totally kidding but now I'm worried.

Flannery Yeah, I heard that in book three they run out of food and start eating each other.

...okayl, that is a lie I just made up. But Morgan rated this book 5 stars and is evidently keeping up with the series, so they must be pretty good!

message 17: by Lyndsey (new) - added it

Lyndsey Oh brother. Is that something brown on your nose? Hahaha. I kid, I kid. Morgan does give good review, so I digress. So do you, Flann! Love for everyone!! (Now who's the brownnoser, lol. I win!)

Flannery There's enough love to go around to everyone! I have to admit--When I meet people in real life and then find out they are on Goodreads, I like them a little bit more. People on here are at least 26.87% cooler than the general public.

message 19: by Lyndsey (new) - added it

Lyndsey No, no. I'd say at least a solid 27%. At least.

I've had much more fun talking about books on this website than I ever did at school. And I've gotten infintely more interested in larger amounts of books, most of them I wouldn't have found without Goodreads.

Morgan F Goodreaders 4 life!

I thought this moment requires some cheesiness.

Lyndsey Amen, sister. Preach it!

Freish - lost in the north LOL but I agree, I am a bibliophile for life thanks to GR

message 24: by AH (new) - rated it 5 stars

AH I've read Gone. It was good. It kind of reminded me of a Stephen King type book done for YA. I've read up to book 3 but I am now tired of the series and 8 books is way too much. The books look huge, but one of the nice things about YA literature is that the books have large type and are double spaced. So a 600 page book in YA is really like a 300 page adult book.

message 25: by Lyndsey (new) - added it

Lyndsey Yeah, I just look at it and think "meh". Maybe having it as an ebook would make it easier since I can't actually see how thick the book is. Lol.

Flannery I just won the new one in the giveaways. Since I've only read the first one, I have the other two (and the new one) just staring at me on the shelf.

message 27: by Lyndsey (new) - added it

Lyndsey These books do like to stare, don't they?

Flannery Always staring, always judging.

message 29: by Lyndsey (new) - added it

Lyndsey Stop looking at me, swan!! Uh, I mean, book. That was weird. My brain has random movie quote spasms where I have to spurt out certain words. Arg.

*sings* Yo ho, Yo ho. A pirate's life for me.

Flannery Shampoo is better!

Morgan F Conditioner is better! It makes the hair silky and smoooooth.

Flannery Rrrrr you going to the mall later?

Morgan F Ooooh! The "c" is silent.

message 34: by Lyndsey (new) - added it

Lyndsey *hums* O, back to school. Back to school.

Morgan F If peeing your pants is cool, consider me Miles Davis.

message 36: by Jillian -always aspiring- (last edited Mar 30, 2011 04:54pm) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jillian -always aspiring- I'm in the minority here since I love the Gone series. Granted, the first one is a bit weak, but the two sequels thus far really up the ante. Michael Grant handles a large cast of characters well, and the story -- though plagued by many science fiction elements -- is more about choices, survival, and the human factor. The story is very much a study on whether actions can truly determine whether a person is 'good' or 'evil' when circumstances are so harsh and terrible. All of the characters are flawed individuals (think along the lines of the cast of Lost), and it is often difficult to determine just who is a hero and who is a villain. Also, this story follows the thought of 'order descending into chaos' and 'things can only get worse and worse,' so that's why I would classify it as dystopian. (That's my plug for the series, I guess. :) )

Anyway, with all that being said. . .I am hoping the series will be six books and not eight. Eight just seems far too much. :(

message 37: by Lyndsey (new) - added it

Lyndsey You should add that to your review, Jill. Lol. Now I want to read it. Just tell it to stop staring at me already! I really miss all the good character shows with large casts. What the hell happened to TV this year?

Morgan F I know! I love the Gone series, but its more of a guilty pleasure than something I actively recommend. I have no idea where the series is going. It just keeps getting darker and more complex. By the rate that Grant is publishing these, and if the series is still 8 books long, the last one won't be published until I graduate college!

Morgan F I miss Lost. Sooooo much.

message 40: by Lyndsey (new) - added it

Lyndsey I miss Lost, and Battlestar Galactica, and Buffy, and Stargate, and Alias, and Firefly. *sobs*

message 41: by AH (new) - rated it 5 stars

AH I'm watching season 1 of Buffy. I've come to realize that I love Willow. I loved Alias and Lost.

How many seasons did Firefly last?

message 42: by Lyndsey (new) - added it

Lyndsey Just one. *sobs more*

Morgan F I'm watching season one of Buffy, too, AH. Gotta love Netflix.

I've never heard of Firefly.....*goes to google*

message 44: by Lyndsey (new) - added it

Lyndsey But yay! Another Buffy convert. Whooooo hoooo. I am so doing my job.

Flannery @Morgan--WHAAAAT? I love Firefly. It's available to watch for free on Netflix and Hulu. (usually)

message 46: by Tina (new)

Tina Wait... did somebody say Firefly? Oh man, don't get me started. My heart..it is broken. It didn't even last a whole season. 13 episodes! just 13. *sobs piteously*

message 47: by Lyndsey (new) - added it

Lyndsey Your piteously sobbing totally kicked my sobbing's ass. However, I feel your pain. We all do. *pats Tina on the shoulder* It's okay. At least now we have Castle. Though that hardly makes up for it.

message 48: by Amy or "Ames" (new)

Amy or "Ames" Lyndsey wrote: "I miss Lost, and Battlestar Galactica, and Buffy, and Stargate, and Alias, and Firefly. *sobs*"

I'm with you on everything but Lost (watched first season and lost -haha- interest) and Battlestar (saw a couple of eps and was oh so bored and threw in the towel).

message 49: by Lyndsey (last edited Mar 30, 2011 08:36pm) (new) - added it

Lyndsey Bored with Battlestar? Really? It became amazing. Not sure when it was that you stopped but every episode seemed to get more intense.

However, Lost was.... tedious. You had to really be in love with the characters to stick with it. I guess BSG is kind of the same way.

message 50: by [deleted user] (new)

I am reading it right now :) About 20% into it.
