Rabbit at Rest
by John Updike
by John Updike
Just purchased this from my Kindle! I almost fell into this book with relief at the seemingly effortless prose, compared with Lisa See, Shanghai Girls. It is tempting to stop everything & read, read, read this. I am very much enjoying it & almost feel back at home with Updike.
Finished this yesterday & would have stopped everything to read if I could. In the end Rabbit comes full circle, running away for the last time to Florida where he comes face to face with the emptiness of life in his condo without his wife who is starting a career. His son is trying to recover from drug rehab & start his life, finally, without his father. Really returning to the beginning, Rabbit watches & then joins in a pick-up basketball game & has his final heart attack. He is at rest, however, as he tells his son. Dying "is not too bad". End of book, end of Rabbit & end of a great series of 4 books. Wow. I feel I've lived part of his life too. The endearing thing about Rabbit is that, even when he faces how bleak life in general & his in particular is, he can still manage to "escape", make a joke, alienate any who would try to care for him & start "running" away again.
