This is the only book I can think of that I liked less than the movie. Much less.
I genuinely liked the plot, but the execution made such a lopsided, wandering mess of the story that it had no tension, no drama and no payoff. There were moments that kept me interested, but they were too few and far between. Upon finishing, it actually made me much less excited to see the film.
So when it finally came to DVD, I expected to be let down. But it was great! The movie boiled the characters down to their essence, cutting out the long meanderings and repetitious nature of the novel. It also raised the damage done by each of the men to levels that make a lifelong feud seem valid and raised the stakes from the book's "oh, his face will be red for sure" to "he just shot him in the #@*$ hand!"
So I would give the movie 4 stars. The book? I'd dump it into a water tank and cart it off with all of the other Prestige Materials.
