Oy. This one gave this hypochondriac much to worry about in the middle of the night. This is how the end of people's lives are told in our culture today, a series of illnesses and afflictions, the ego unable to accept the body's defeat. If there's any redemption in Roth, it's only in the language and this one reads a little more like a medical history than a literary tale.
