I recognize that this book may have some flaws -- it's strangely insular in its depiction of the author's episodes of drug use. You don't learn much about the rest of his life. And yet, I LOVED the way he depicting without oversimplifying the connection between childhood bodily rituals with his later drug use. I LOVED how the book avoided the politically correct twelve step sort of talk of redemption and salvation and platitudes. I guess ultimately I just LOVED this narrator. For me, the intensity of the language was its own drug. I hear a sequel is already on the way.
